Rimsulfuron can be called by its other names such as 1-(4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)-3-(3-ethylsulfonyl-2-pyridylsulfonyl)urea, N-((4,6-Dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl)-3-(ethylsulfonyl)-2-pyridinesulfonamide, N-[[(4,6-Dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino)carbonyl]-3-(ethylsulfonyl)-2-pyridine sulfonamide, and 2-Pyridinesulfonamide.
Rimsulfuron inhibits the activity of acetolactate synthase (ALS), also known as acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) in plants and which is responsible for protein formation, thereby effectively stopping the growth of the apical meristem and the root tip.
Rimsulfuron can cause eye, skin, and mucous membrane irritations. It can also cause headache, nausea, and confusion.
Rimsulfuron is bad for the respiratory system. Exposure to it can result in coughing, difficulty in breathing, and modearate emphysema.
Rimsulfuron is bad for the digestive system. It can cause electrolyte depletion, diarrhea, and vomiting. Severe exposure can lead to weight loss and protein metabolism disturbances.
Rimsulfuron acts as a herbicide of some grasses and annual and perennial broadleaf weeds and is especially effective for the control of glyphosate-resistant weed species such as ryegrass, horseweed, fleabane, barnyard grass, crab grass, dandelion, filaree, foxtail, and quackgrass.
When handling rimsulfuron, a known herbicide, always remember to wear protective clothing – this includes a mask, chemical-resistant gloves that is made of polyethylene or polyvinylchloride, shoes, and socks. Needless to say, if your clothing has been drenched with rimsulfuron, do not use that piece of clothing anymore.
Wash your hands before you eat, chew gum, drink, smoke, or use the bathroom after handling this product. Do not apply rimsulfuron in an area where it could possibly come into contact with other people. Do not enter an area that has been sprayed with rimsulfuron until after four hours have passed.
To avoid possibly contaminating your area’s water supply, you should take care to prevent it from getting into sewers, low areas, or waterways.
Some experts advise using an alternative chemical product with less propensity for toxicity to people and plant and animal life and environmental contamination, as it can negatively impact the air, soil, and water.
Also, if you plan on reusing the material that contained the chemical, you should make sure to wash it at least thrice. If you plan on disposing it, do so by chucking it at a nearby sanitary landfill, or incinerate it. Remember to stay away from the smoke that will arise from the burning material, as even that is toxic.
